A practical guide for community-engaged evaluators, practitioners, and data leaders.
Overview
Co-authored by BSRI and 1000 Feathers, this white paper explores how slowing down the scientific method can better support equity-centered evaluation and participatory practice in community settings.
By intentionally reworking how we form questions, collect data, interpret findings, and share results, the guide helps practitioners rebalance rigor and reflection—especially in fast-paced environments where community trust, cultural relevance, and historical context matter.
This resource was created in response to a growing need for inclusive research practices that center people over processes, and learning over speed.
Key Sections & Framework
The resource follows a 4-part reimagined framework for engaging in research or evaluation:
- Formulating the Question: Rooting research and evaluation questions in context, equity, and impact.
- Collecting Data: Slowing down engagement to center consent, reciprocity, and mutuality.
- Interpreting Findings: Using mixed methods and inclusive sensemaking strategies.
- Communicating Results: Sharing insights responsibly with different audiences, including communities.
Each section includes guiding questions, reflection prompts, and real-world scenarios.
