Supporting Career Transitions with Structure and Care: The BSRI Hiring Process Checklist

A career transition often comes with more moving pieces than people expect. Beyond finding open roles, there is the work of getting clear on priorities, organizing materials, managing timelines, preparing for conversations, following up, and making thoughtful decisions along the way. For many people, this happens without dedicated support from a coach, recruiter, headhunter, or career advisor, which can make the process feel even more difficult to navigate.Ā

In my experience leading People work, some of the most meaningful support happens behind the scenes. It is the planning, anticipating, resource-building, and one-on-one guidance that may not always be visible, but can deeply shape how people experience change. My approach to this work has always been rooted in the belief that care should be paired with structure. Support is not only about being available to listen; it is also about building systems, tools, and practices that help people move forward with more direction. During BSRI’s organizational transition, this became especially important to me. Supporting our team through what comes next could not only be about communication and encouragement; it also needed to include practical resources that helped make the process feel more manageable… and most importantly, like they were not doing it alone – because they weren’t.

For me, employee experience does not end when someone begins preparing for their next role. How people are supported through transition is also part of culture, leadership, and organizational responsibility. This checklist was created as part of BSRI’s broader Transition Work Series, an internal support ecosystem developed during our transition year to support our team as they prepare for their next professional chapters. The series has covered several career-transition topics, including networking, personal branding, portfolios, the hiring process, interviewing, and other practical resources designed to help our team move forward with more direction, structure, and preparedness.Ā

The BSRI Hiring Process Checklist is meant to be a practical guide to help job seekers move through each stage of the search with more clarity, organization, and confidence. It breaks the process into manageable steps, including reflecting on career goals, researching opportunities, preparing application materials, tracking outreach, practicing for interviews, and making thoughtful decisions once an offer is received.

Rather than treating the job search as one large task, this resource helps individuals approach it as a series of smaller, intentional actions. The goal is not to make the process perfect or remove every uncertainty. It is to help job seekers feel more grounded, prepared, and intentional as they navigate a process that can otherwise feel scattered or isolating.

In practice, the checklist is meant to help job seekers pause, prioritize, and move through the process with more intention. It can be used to map out next steps, track progress across roles, prepare for key conversations, and create space to evaluate whether an opportunity is truly aligned with someone’s goals, values, and needs.

This resource may be especially helpful for people who are:

  • Navigating a career transition or organizational change.
  • Preparing to apply for new roles.
  • Trying to stay organized across multiple applications and conversations.
  • Looking for a simple structure to guide their job search from start to finish.
  • Supporting others through a career or employment transition.

Although it was created to support our team through an organization-driven change, I hope it can serve anyone preparing for a career move, whether by choice, circumstance, or a little bit of both.

From building pathways to professionally develop within our organization to helping team members move beyond our walls to their next role, we’ve always prioritized supporting each team member in their pursuits. This kind of support should feel more normal and inherent to how organizations do business. Employees should not have to navigate major career transitions alone or only with the resources they can personally access or afford. As we continue sharing tools and reflections from our own practice, my hope is that this checklist helps others feel more prepared, grounded, and confident as they navigate their next chapter.
